Creating Kids’ Rooms with Liza Chloë

Inspired by retro toys, playful colour combinations and natural materials, Liza Chloë van Duyn creates kids’ rooms where style and play go hand in hand. Join us as we step inside her boys’ room and talk to Liza about her approach to children’s interiors, her sources of inspiration, and how MODU brings movement, imagination and playful challenges into everyday life.

Your boys’ rooms are so beautifully decorated, with very unique little details and playful colour schemes. Where do you draw inspiration for kids’ room decor?

For the kids’ rooms I drew inspiration from retro toys and their color combinations. I felt like retro toys contain a certain beauty without restraining from colors and patterns with natural materials as foundation.

How do you balance functionality and aesthetics when decorating kids’ spaces?

Most functional pieces in the rooms are made from natural materials and all decorations bring in the color and patterns. This way colors and patterns can rotate over time and fundamental furniture pieces can stay forever.

Can you share your thoughts on how MODU fits into your play environments at home, and how you make use of MODU’s various functionalities in the kids’ rooms?

We have two children, one who’s five and one who’s one and a half, and it’s very lovely to have toys that are fun for both ages. While my oldest often builds big and challenging parcours, the youngest is already happy to partake in the smallest details. And I also love the way MODU can take on a role in the room, being a car, rocket ship, or fantasy animal and also allow for it to be taken apart and gather in one spot.

What's your number one tip in terms of how to approach designing and decorating a kids’ room?

Keep your foundation simple and add the fun step by step. You can go as crazy as you want.

Tell us about the boys’ number one MODU creation or game at the moment.

They are obsessed with building parcours, balancing through the room and leveling up whenever they succeed.
