Then & Now with Freja Bak Josias

In their charming loft apartment in Frederiksberg, MODU remains part of Freja and her family’s everyday life — from playful builds and imaginative setups to gentle moments of sibling play.

We first met Freja in 2024 , when her daughter Ruth was just about to turn two. Since then, the family has grown: Ruth is now three and a half, and baby Abel, six months old, has arrived. We revisited the family of four to see how MODU has grown with them, finding new uses and meanings — from then to now.

How does MODU fit into your home and everyday family life today?

MODU fits very naturally into our home. It’s such a versatile toy — we keep rebuilding it into all sorts of shapes, whether it’s for play, to help Ruth reach the kitchen counter when we’re cooking, or as a prop in her imaginative play world. Only imagination sets the boundaries!

When we last visited, Ruth was just about to turn two. How have you seen her play with MODU evolve since then?

Back then, she relied on us to join in and help assemble the builds. Now, she does it all by herself! She doesn’t follow the manual but instead uses her imagination to create whatever comes to mind.

Is there a particular moment that shows how she has grown with the toy — or how the toy has grown with her?

I can’t recall one specific moment, but it’s very clear that she knows every single piece. Each block has its own function and meaning in her play. When a piece goes missing, she’s the first to notice. That awareness, and the ability to imagine all sorts of creations and games, has come gradually as she’s grown with the toy.

Have you noticed the family interacting with MODU differently now that a new little one has joined?

Ruth takes it slower around Abel, and her play becomes more gentle. She loves to include him her her play although, even though he can’t really participate yet. She uses MODU to interact and bring him into her play world, which is so sweet to watch!

Which new MODU creations or setups have become favorites in your home lately?

Ruth is very into the katapult at the moment, giving her teddys a fly! She also loves the balance beams, using them to make obstacle courses or to build little setups like an ice cream stand or a small shop. That’s her latest thing: selling coffee and ice cream to everyone!
