A Playful Home with Amalie Nielsen
In the heart of Frederiksberg, Copenhagen, city-loving explorer and homebody, Amalie Nielsen, lives with her partner and their 8-month-old daughter. A home shaped by Amalie's creative spirit and filled with colour, art, and engaging objects. We visited Amalie to talk about her approach to interiors, the ways she incorporates toys into everyday life, and how she defines a playful home.
Can you tell us a little about yourself and your family?
I’m Amalie, a 30-year-old creative — city-loving explorer and homebody at the same time.
When I’m not on maternity leave, I’m the founder of Figarine, my women’s accessories brand, and Franka, my little creative kids’ universe. Alongside this, I work as a content creator, inspiring on an everyday level and sharing what I find beautiful and inspiring through my camera lens.
We’re a family of three — me, my partner Frederik, and our 8-month-old daughter, Billie. We live in our apartment in the heart of Frederiksberg in Copenhagen, a place we love for its openness and flow, making it possible to be together no matter what we’re doing.
A lot of my creativity is shaped by the environments I’m in, which is why our apartment plays such a big role in how I find inspiration.
What’s important to you when creating a home for you and your family?
Creating a place where you truly feel at home.
Home is where I recharge. I love being social, but I’m a true homebody who needs space to breathe.
It’s also a place to be creative, to play, to eat, to relax and to be together. That’s why our three en-suite rooms function as our main living spaces — they allow us to move freely while still feeling connected.
Good storage solutions are very important to me. Clutter can quickly make me feel overstimulated, so having practical and accessible storage — for both adults and little ones — makes a big difference.
What is a “playful” home to you?
A playful home is colorful, warm, and inviting — a space that encourages play.
Toys are part of our décor, which also makes them easy to access and use. I like to rotate Billie’s toys so there’s always something new catching her eye and inviting her into a new kind of play.
How do you incorporate play into your home?
We make toys and playful objects easily accessible throughout our space.
We have a mobile hanging in the living room that’s always gently moving — I love how it adds a subtle sense of flow and playfulness to the room.
When decorating, we really played with objects. That’s also why we kept the 3.20-meter-high walls white — they create a calm backdrop for colorful, warm objects that can be moved around to create different moods.
How does MODU fit into this?
MODU is simply fun. It allows both kids and adults to play together — building from imagination and creating stories through play.
The subtle colors make it easy to have in your home, as it blends naturally into the space. I really appreciate that it feels like a part of the home rather than something that needs to be tucked away.
What’s currently your favorite way to play with MODU, and how do you use its different functions in everyday life?
As Billie has started moving more, we’ve been using it for wheeling her around while she sits upright — it brings so many giggles when she spins around.
We also use the bricks as busy boards, both with the rattle sticks and with her play silks threaded through the holes.
The rattle sticks are always a favorite — whether they’re rolling across the floor with their patterns shifting or simply creating soft music as they move.
